In a statement sent to Lusa, the sole deputy of Juntos Pelo Povo in the Assembly of the Republic calls for a meeting between the head of state and the leader of the executive that "goes beyond photographs and circumstantial statements" and that "brings concrete measures, because the country is burning and there is no more time to lose."
"One of the issues that needs to be on the table is the tragedy of forest fires and the national shame of our continued lack of serious prevention measures," said Deputy Filipe Sousa.
The Madeiran party criticizes the "lack of planning and failure of governance" that caused Portugal to enter the "critical phase of the summer without its own air resources", considering it "unacceptable that a country that knows exactly when the fire season begins still depends on last-minute negotiations and improvised rentals".
Filipe Sousa refers to the fact that Portugal activated the bilateral cooperation mechanism with Morocco and received two Canadair aircraft to fight the fires, following the failure of aircraft operating in the country.
The JPP demands "serious, year-round prevention" as well as "permanent, national resources, effective coordination, and an end to dependence on rushed solutions."
"Fire doesn't wait for meetings or bureaucracy. Flames don't want excuses. It's time to act responsibly and courageously, because every day that passes without a decision means more territory, more lives, and more future are lost," the party concludes.
The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, will meet today at Faro City Hall, both press offices announced.
The information that the weekly meeting between the head of state and the leader of the executive will take place in Faro, at 6:00 pm, instead of being held at the Belém Palace, as is traditional, was published almost simultaneously, being released first by the Presidency and a minute later by the Prime Minister's office.
